5 Warning Signs to Repair or Replace Your Tires
Tires can present several unique problems over time. Some issues only require a little patch-up while others may signify that it’s time to buy a replacement. Not sure if you need to replace or just repair your tires? We’ve compiled a list of common tire issues that could be a sign that it’s time to repair or replace your tires.
1. Tire Warning Light
If you own a car made after 2008, your car likely has a tire pressure warning light. The tire pressure light is the “horseshoe” shaped light with an exclamation point in the middle. You can try to solve the issue by adding some air, but if you continually see this warning light on your dashboard, that could be a sign of a leak. A mechanic can likely identify where the leak is coming from and what caused it. In this case, the mechanic can either patch it up or recommend getting a replacement tire if there is too much damage.
2. Irregular Vibrations & Steering Issues
If you experience vibrations from your steering wheel you may have a number of tire problems such as mis-aligned tires, improper inflation, worn suspension parts and more. You don’t want to take your chances with this. In these conditions, a blowout, mechanical breakdown or an accident is no longer a matter of if but when. If you experience this see a mechanic ASAP to diagnose the problem and the best course of action to fix it.
3. Low Tire Tread
As your tires wear down, you run the risk of exposing wires which can lead to tire blowouts, or not having enough “grip” to drive safely on a wet or icy road, which can result in skidding or accidents. There is no way to repair a worn tire, so it is best to have a mechanic check your tires during your regular car maintenance appointments until it is time to replace them.
4. Bubbles on the Sides
Tire bubbles are caused by air from inside the tire leaking into the body of the tire. They are usually caused by damage such as potholes, railroad tracks, debris and speed bumps. These bubbles will be identified by any cuts or bruising. If the tire is damaged, it will need to be replaced. Patches will not fix the problem because the sides of the tire are too flexible and the patch will not hold.
5. Cracks
Tire cracks are signs of tire degradation from either aging or improper use. More than likely, the tire will have small cracks all over, and this cannot be repaired. A tire having cracks all over it means it’s time to be replaced.
